BMW of the 3rd series can be equipped with the automatic transmission (AT). In the course of start-off from a place of AT carries out function of ordinary coupling, and during the movement performs work on gear shifting.

The AT main hubs are: torque converter, planetary reducer and hydraulic or electronic control system. Hydrodriving disk brakes and disk coupling are applied to transition to another transfer the relation in a planetary reducer.
The torque converter on the functions corresponds to hydraulic coupling. Its task includes implementation of coupling at start-off about places and gear shifting without mechanical influence.

Control of effort of pressing when switching is exercised by the electronic device instead of the hydraulics applied in usual by a check point. Thus, there is fuller information for better management of switching process that gives the chance to choose the optimum transfer relation depending on the mode of operation of the car and desire of the driver. The considered control system of BMW firm has designation of AGS (Adaptive Getriebesteuerung) (An adaptive control system of transmission).

The monitor distinguishes on the speed with which the pedal is pressed, whether the driver wants to go "is sports" or is "economic" and according to it operates a gear shifting point. Whether at management of process of switching also resistance to the movement is considered, for example, the car uphill or from the mountain, acceleration of braking and the movement on turn moves.

Steptronic – automatic equipment of step switching

The 5-staged automatic transmission near a path of automatic switching has a short coulisse with step switching. Such switchings are accepted in motorcycle sport.

In Steptronic system the driver can switch transfers at will up or down. In comparison with manual switching the Steptronic system considerably more with comfort is also protected from errors of management. For example, switching of transfer is not carried out if thereof the most admissible number of turns of the engine is exceeded.

At emergence of malfunctions with entrance signals or with electromagnetic valves switching on the emergency program of work is made. Evaluation of the work of an automatic transmission and for search of malfunctions requires existence of a certain experience. Therefore here only removal of a check point and adjustment of draft of the selector are described. Oil in a check point is replaced only at repair. Replacement of oil when carrying out maintenance is not made.
