Removal and installation of camshafts

Camshafts at the 4-valvate engine can be removed if, for example, it is necessary to weaken bolts of fastening of a head of cylinders. As the special BMW tool for this purpose is required, it is recommended to perform this operation on HUNDRED BMWs.

At installation without special tool there is a danger of damage of camshafts. Besides, valves can be bent at contact with the bottoms of pistons.

All elements of the valvate drive, for example, inserts of bearings or dish-shaped springs and gear plugs on asterisks have to be established on their former places. For this purpose they need to be placed on the special pallet.


Models 320i, 323i, 328i (M52TU engine)

 REMOVAL

1 Remove a casing of the air filter, address to the Section Removal and installation of the air filter of the engine.
2 Remove spark plugs, address to the Section of the Spark plug.

3 Disconnect a branch pipe of ventilation of a case at a cover of a head of cylinders of the pipeline".

4 Turn off bolts of fastening and uncover heads of cylinders (an arrow on an illustration). Thus pay attention to rubber laying of bolts of fastening that later it is correct to establish them.

5 Remove the fan fan/coupling, address to the Section Removal and installation of the fan with the viscous coupling.
6 Uncover a camshaft of inlet valves.

7 Disconnect an oil pipeline (the shooter on an illustration) at the double VANOS block.

8 Instead of an oil pipeline attach to the double VANOS block compressed air through the corresponding adapter and give air pressure from 2 to 8 bars.

These and subsequent operations are necessary to establish camshafts in their basic position.

9 Turn a cranked shaft at least on two turnovers of the direction of an hour hand at the loaded VANOS block. To turn a cranked shaft and respectively the engine it is possible for one of the next ways:

— Switch a check point in neutral situation and tighten the parking brake. Turn a cranked shaft for the central bolt of fastening of a pulley in the direction of an hour hand by means of a head.
— Lift and install the car on supports sideways behind. Include the fifth transfer and release the parking brake. Turn the lifted back wheel forward. Thus the cranked shaft at the same time turns
— Install the car on an equal platform. Include the fifth transfer. Carefully shift or ask to shift the car forward.

10 Establish a cranked shaft in position VMT of the first cylinder. Tops of cams (an arrow on an illustration) inlet and final valves of the first cylinder (from the GRM drive) have to be turned up.

11 Record a cranked shaft in situation VMT by the BMW tool or other suitable core. For this purpose insert a core into an opening in the block of cylinders (the shooter on an illustration) in a flywheel opening, having taken out previously a stopper in the block of cylinders.

12 Turn out hairpins (arrows on an illustration).

13 Record camshafts the BMW-11 3 240 tool, shown on an illustration in position VMT of the first cylinder. It is possible to use the KLANI KL-0580-4 tool. The tool is installed through a hexagon of camshafts and is imposed on an edge of a head of cylinders.

14 Disconnect compressed air from the VANOS-4-block.

After opening of carving traffic jams oil follows. Prepare a rag and capacity. The oil which got on rubber elements and maple a belt, immediately wipe.

15 Turn out carving traffic jams-1-in an axis of camshafts of inlet and final valves, wipe the flowed-out oil.
16 Take out cover flat-nose pliers - 2-under traffic jams.
17 Turn out the calibrated bolts-3-under covers.

Bolts have the left carving, that is for an otvorachivaniye they should be rotated to the right.

18 Turn off an eye (arrows on an illustration).

19 I will corrode Rasstykuyte at the VANOS block.

20 Turn off nuts (arrows on an illustration) and remove the VANOS block.

After removal of the VANOS block to turn the engine it is not allowed. The gear roller of a camshaft of inlet valves can slip out shlitsevy connection and valves will become uncontrollable and can strike on the piston bottom.


21 Turn out a natyazhitel of a chain (the shooter on an illustration) at a head of cylinders.

Hold a natyazhitel, he is under pressure of a spring.


22 Press the top natyazhitel of a chain at a connecting chain between camshafts and record in this situation, having inserted the BMW-11 3 292 tool.

23 Turn off three nuts of fastening of the sensor on an asterisk of a camshaft of final valves. Remove a sensor wheel from a dish-shaped spring from an asterisk.

24 Turn off fastening nuts (arrows on an illustration) on an asterisk of a camshaft of inlet valves. Remove a persistent washer from an asterisk.

Before an otvorachivaniye of nuts of fastening of an asterisk of a camshaft of final valves lead round nuts a felt-tip pen that at installation to fix an asterisk in its former situation. Otherwise it is correct to expose asterisks it will be possible only by means of the special BMW tool.

25 Turn off three bolts of fastening of an asterisk of a camshaft of final valves.
26 Remove both asterisks with a chain from camshafts.

27 Disconnect the top natyazhitel of a chain (an arrow on an illustration).

28 Disconnect an asterisk from a camshaft.

Fix an asterisk a wire that it did not slip down.


29 removal of camshafts requires the BMW 11 3 260 adaptation. It is intended for all bearings of camshafts in the provision of installation when inserts of bearings are released. Operation of removal of both camshafts is identical, the sequence of removal does not matter.

30 Turn out spark plugs. Install the adaptation and fix it in carving openings of spark plugs of cylinders 1 and 4 the moment of 25 N • m.

31 Turn a wrench an eccentric shaft in the direction of an arrow and fix covers of bearings.

32 Weaken bolts of fastening of all covers of bearings.

The cover of the first bearing of a camshaft of inlet valves is aligned by plugs. For an exception of a distortion of a camshaft turn off bolts of fastening of a cover of the first bearing and remove it.

33 Weaken the adaptation and remove it.

34 Uncover bearings and camshafts. Put covers as their installation on the engine. Installation of covers on the engine needs to be executed in the same order. Covers of bearings of a camshaft of final valves have marking from A1 on A7, camshafts of inlet valves from E1 on E7 (arrows on an illustration).

35 If it is necessary, for example, for removal of valves, remove in a set a level of bearings-2-with pushers. Pay attention to the aligning plugs-2-. Levels of bearings in a point "2" have marking "And" for the party of release and "Е" for the party of an admission.

Pushers of valves can slip out down a level of bearings if they are not fixed. HUNDRED BMWs apply to this purpose of a sucker which can be established from above on a pusher and interfere with a vyskalzyvaniye. Mark pushers. They have to be established on a former place if were taken out from a level. 1 - head of cylinders.

Do not put the removed pushers more than for 10 min. on a head, otherwise from it motive oil will flow out and automatic compensation of valvate gaps will cease to work.

 INSTALLATION

Before installation of camshafts turn a cranked shaft approximately on 30 ° against the direction of rotation of the engine (to the left for a pulley hexagon) through VMT. Thus, any of pistons will not stand above and it will be possible to put valves into place. Hydropushers of valves without loading from a camshaft are extended and after installation demand some time again to contract. Thereof valves can be open more, than it corresponds to the provision of a camshaft and can get on pistons. Therefore after installation of camshafts it is necessary to wait 40 min. until it is possible to turn the engine. Only after that it is possible to turn a cranked shaft in situation VMT and to establish GRM drive chains, address to the subsection Installation of a Head of Cylinders.

1 Check a surface of pushers, with defects replace.

2 Establish a level with bearings and the inserted pushers in a head of cylinders. Check existence of the centering plugs-3-.

3 Insert inserts of bearings according to marking. They have to be at former places.
4 Insert the adaptation and clamp inserts.
5 Tighten inserts of camshafts the moment of 15 N • m.
6 Remove the adaptation.

7 Insert a ruler for fixing of camshafts.

8 If necessary. An arrow - a hexagon of the second camshaft.

Watch to damaging the case of camshafts. If necessary to a soshlifuyta outside wrench.

9 Fix a wheel of the sensor and a persistent washer on a camshaft of inlet valves the moment of 20 N • m.

10 Establish an asterisk on distributive to a shaft of final valves. The arrow on an asterisk has to specify towards the top edge of a head of cylinders.

11 The piston of a natyazhitel of a chain-1-will be turned out. Screw in a carving of a natyazhitel the BMW tool – 11 4 220.

The specified tool presses a chain and pulls it that asterisks of camshafts were in the working family way a little. With some skills such tool can be made independently. In the absence of the tool the correct installation of a chain is impossible.

12 Slightly press a natyazhitel of a chain rotation of the tension screw of the BMW tool – 11 4 220. The chain should not sag.

13 Expose an asterisk on a camshaft of final valves. The arrow on an asterisk has to specify in the parties of the top edge of a head of cylinders.

14 Fix an asterisk on distributive to a shaft of final valves three bolts the moment of 28 N • m.

15 Fix the top natyazhitel of a chain.

16 Insert the gear plug-6-. Thus hollows of teeths on distributive to a shaft and the gear plug have to be opposite to each other (an arrow on an illustration).

17 Insert a gear shaft so that bolts of fastening of an asterisk lay in the center of oval openings of the gear plug.

18 Put on the top chain asterisks and expose according to the markings put at removal. If new details are established, transfer to them markings from old details.

19 Put on the top chain with both asterisks camshafts. Thus hollows of teeths (the shooter on an illustration) on distributive to a shaft of inlet valves and on an asterisk have to be opposite to each other. Insert a gear shaft-4 pins into hollows of teeths and press.

Unlike an illustration the persistent washer-5-is not established yet.

20 Again take out a gear shaft-4-a little so that 1 mm of width of tooth was visible.
21 Establish a persistent washer on an asterisk of a camshaft of inlet valves so that it was possible to read an inscription of "FRONT". Screw nuts of fastening of an asterisk so that they prilgat, but do not tighten them.
22 Fix an asterisk of camshafts, having tightened nuts the moment of 5 N • m, and then again weaken them half way.
23 Establish a persistent washer on an asterisk of a camshaft of inlet valves so that the inscription of "F" was visible. If the inscription is not visible, pay attention to the direction of installation of a persistent washer: Big adjacent diameter has to show in the direction of a camshaft.
24 Establish a sensor wheel on an asterisk of a camshaft of final valves. The arrow on a wheel has to be turned outside towards the top edge of a head of cylinders.
25 Take out against the stop a gear shaft on an asterisk of a camshaft of final valves.

26 Press a hand on a natyazhitel of the top chain and remove the fixing BMW tool.

27 Pull a chain rotation of the tension screw of the BMW-11 4 220 tool the moment of 0.7 N • m.

28 Clear a sealing surface of the VANOS block of oil and pollution. Check existence of the directing plugs-1-.

29 Fix the BMW-11 6 150 tool - 1-(shooters on an illustration). This tool fixes gear plugs at a tension of asterisks.

30 Press three nuts-2-and-3-to both asterisks at first the moment of 5 N • m, without tightening them.
31 Tighten bolts-4-in grooves the moment of 22 N • m.
32 Tighten nuts-2-and-3 moment of 22 N • m.
33 Disconnect the BMW-11 6 150 tool.
34 Condense corners of a sealing surface between a head of cylinders and the VANOS block Drei Bond 1209 or Loctite Ultra Black sealant.

35 Replace sealing laying of the VANOS block. Fix the block (arrows on an illustration). Tighten M6 nuts the moment of 10 N • m and nuts of M6 the moment of 22 N • m.

36 Join the socket at the VANOS block.
37 Screw the directing bolts at camshafts of inlet and final valves and tighten the moment 10 N • m.

The left carving, that is for a wraparound it is necessary to rotate to the left.

38 Replace the covers which are under carving traffic jams and insert them flat-nose pliers.
39 Wrap carving traffic jams with new sealing rings at camshafts an admission of inlet and final valves and tighten the moment 50 N • m.
40 Fix bolts an engine eye in front.
41 Remove the special tool for fixing of distributive and cranked shaft.

42 Attach the pipeline of compressed air by means of an adapter and give air pressure of 2 - 8 bars.

43 Turn not less than on two turns a cranked shaft in the direction of an hour hand and the VANOS block loaded with air.

44 Install the engine in position VMT of the first cylinder. Tops of cams of inlet and final valves of the first cylinder (an arrow on an illustration) have to be turned up at the same time.

45 Again insert a core for fixing of a cranked shaft.

46 Again insert a core for fixing of a camshaft.

The ruler for fixing of camshafts can tower on 1 mm over a camshaft of inlet valves. If the ruler from a final collector costs highly, it is necessary to adjust the gas-distributing mechanism turn of asterisks of camshafts. For this purpose weaken asterisks on camshafts, turn them and then again fix the moment 22 N • m.

47 Remove a ruler for fixing of camshafts.
48 Remove accession of compressed air from the VANOS block. Fix an oil pipeline to the VANOS block with new consolidations the moment of 30 N • m. Join the socket.

49 Turn out the BMW-11 4 220 tool at a natyazhitel of a chain.

50 Turn out the chain tension piston with a new sealing ring the moment of 70 N • to m.

51 Screw a finger of a cover of a head of cylinders.

52 Establish a cover of camshafts of inlet valves.
53 Grease the interfaced surfaces between the VANOS block and a head of cylinders sealant, for example, of "Drei Bond 1209" or "Loctite Ultra Black".
Grease with 54 Same sealant transitions to polukruzhyam a sealing surface to a cover of a head of cylinders.

55 Establish covers of a head of cylinders. Replace the damaged laying, address to an accompanying illustration. At installation of laying of a cover of a head of cylinders pay special attention to the correct situation in polukruzhyakh the face party of a head of cylinders. Evenly press out a cover the moment of 10 N • m.

56 Insert the sensor of recognition of cylinders and fix it. At damage of a sealing ring replace it.
57 Establish spark plugs, address to the Section of the Spark plug.
58 Establish a final collector and a reception pipe, address to the Section Removal and installation of a final collector.

Before start of the engine take out a core of situation VMT in a flywheel. Again establish in an opening on the block of cylinders a cap.

59 Establish accession for ventilation of a case on a cover of a head of cylinders and record it.

60 Install the fan fan/coupling, address to the Section Removal and installation of the fan with the viscous coupling.
61 Establish a casing of the air filter, address to the Section Removal and installation of the air filter of the engine.


Model 320d (M47 engine)

 REMOVAL

The operations and instructions existing for all engines are given in the Section for engines 316i, 318i. Only the differences relating to the engine 320d are given in the present Section.

1 Remove the vacuum pump, address to appropriate section.
2 Uncover heads of cylinders, address to the Section Removal and installation of a head cylinders/replacement of sealing laying.

3 Record a cranked shaft in situation VMT by the BMW-11 2 300 tool or other corresponding core. For this purpose insert a core through an opening in the block of cylinders over a starter into a flywheel opening.

4 Record a natyazhitel of a chain in the squeezed situation. For this purpose turn out the screw with an internal hexagon around a face wall of the block of cylinders (the shooter on an illustration) and insert a core of BMW-11 3 340 or other suitable core.

5 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove the top directing chain.
6 Turn off bolts of fastening and remove both asterisks of camshafts. Thus hold shaft for a hexagon. To fixing of a camshaft of inlet valves HUNDRED BMWs are used by the BMW-11 6 320 tool.
7 Turn off bolts of fastening and uncover bearings of camshafts. Put them as installation. Take out camshafts.
8 Take out yokes from a head of cylinders and also put them on the engine as installation. The moments of an inhaling are given in Specifications.
